Blood stain on clinic linen exposed

SANDTON - Kate Binge, a patient at Mediclinic Sandton, was horrified to find a bloodstain on her bed linen at the clinic.

The bloody linen was exposed on Twitter, provoking an uproar with people expressing their shock at the incident.

Binge said she was admitted to the clinic for a pseudomonas infection. She explained, “I was taken to my designated bed. The sister went away and I decided to roll back the covers of my bed. I first came across a soiled sheet that I later realised was sticky residue from a dressing, and then to my horror, I came across the blood on the underside of the duvet.”

Binge quickly got out of the bed and pulled the linen off. “Already nauseous from my infection, I felt as if I was going to be sick,” said Binge. “I could not believe what I saw.”

She then rang the bell for attention, and the sister who was attending to her at the clinic responded promptly. “I asked that all the linen be changed immediately, which it was,” said Binge.

She said the sister was as horrified as she was.

“They were very apologetic and agreed with me that it was unacceptable,” said Binge.

Mediclinic Sandton was contacted and they said there was nothing to be concerned about as the incident was dealt with immediately.

Binge said she kept thinking about all the other times she was at the clinic. “I wondered if it had happened before,” she said. “It is unacceptable to have linen like that. You would think since the staff all know my condition, they would take extra care knowing my vulnerable position.” Her condition makes her susceptible to infection.
