Five things you need to know about the sentencing of Pistorius

He has been on R100 000 bail since 22 February last year. Sentencing began on 13 October this year and here are five facts to know about the sentencing of Pistorius.

•  Pistorius was found guilty on charges of discharging a firearm in public and culpable homicide, but was acquitted of the charges of premeditated murder and two charges of illegal possession of a firearm.

•  The defence feels that Pistorius will be victimised in prison and unable to defend himself, and so are pressing for a community-based sentence or house arrest. The state, led by Gerrie Nel, wants Pisorius to be sent to prison for at least 10 years.

•  It was revealed during sentencing that Pistorius had been paying the Steenkamp family R6 000 every month since March last year as compensation. Some say this act was an attempt to influence the state in its verdict, while others feel that it showed that he was taking responsibility for his actions.

•  Judge Thokozile Masipa could hand down Pistorius a sentence ranging from a suspended sentence (during which he would serve no jail time), a fine, house arrest or prison for no more than 15 years.

•  Masipa will pass down sentencing to Pistorius on 21 October.
