Opening the youth’s eyes on child labour

WOODMEAD - The Department of Labour hosted a very special function informing pupils from schools in the Alexandra and Soweto areas on the horrors of child labour for Gauteng Child Labour Day on 2 October.

Pupils from Noordegesig, Ikage, Dr. Knak, Zenzeleni, Iphuteng, Bovet and Mfundisweni Primary Schools gathered at Cedar Park in Woodmead to view presentations from representatives from organisations such as Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and Child Welfare.

Representative from COSATU Pinky Mnguni said, “As COSATU we are also parents. And as parents it is up to us to take care of our children and the public, as per our constitution, should be at the forefront in protecting the rights of our children.”

Mnguni said she hoped the children gained insight into the plight of child labour and realise how the municipal structures are making sure to protect their rights.

Khosi Mbisi from the Department of Social Development said, “An event like this is very helpful because it creates more awareness in our communities. The department supports events such as this that help us take care of our children.”

Mbisi added, “One of the primary functions of our department is to make sure that our children are taken care of. We say that children should be going to school and they should be protected.”
