Grayston resident burgled after construction work completed

SANDTON - A Sandton resident has expressed outrage after her house was allegedly broken into following construction in front of her house on 13 September.

The resident said a construction company, Hezeki Contracting apparently hired by MTN, had been digging up her driveway in order to install fibre optic cables along Grayston Drive. She said the company had not given her any notice prior to the commencement of the construction.

She added, “They asked me for a convenient time when they could do their work. I was on my way out and told them I would be away between 10am and 3pm to pick up my children. When I got home I found the gates leading to the house broken and we had been robbed.”

The workers claim to have not seen anyone breaking into her home, but the resident said she has her doubts about that.

Spokesperson of the Sandton police, Captain Kym Cloete, said the police were currently investigating and have interrogated the workers near the resident’s home. She said, “We currently do not have sufficient evidence that links these men to the alleged burglary.”

As of yet MTN has not released a statement regarding the issue, but Gordan Calitz, health and safety manager at Hezeki Contracting said, “The police need to do a thorough investigation of the situation to catch the culprit, and we will provide them with as much support as possible. We’ve had some meetings with the home owners, but for now we need to let the legal process of the country take place.”

Calitz added he has agreed to allow his employees working on the day to undergo polygraph examinations.

The resident has personally offered a reward to anyone with information that could lead to arrests.
