Bryanston stabbing case postponed

BRYANSTON - Yengesen Pillay, the suspect accused of stabbing his wife 50 times in Bryanston, appeared in court on 30 September but the case is still undecided as the suspect still awaits psychiatric evaluation.

After the last postponement of the murder case on 28 August, Pillay was expected to undergo 30 day psychiatric evaluation. However senior state prosecutor at Randburg Magistrate’s Court Eric Mushanei said the accused was number 109 on the waiting list for a bed and psychiatric evaluation at Sterkfontein Hospital.

Pillay has been awaiting evaluation in the medical section of the Johannesburg Prison. Magistrate Anja Hambroc postponed the case to 2 December in order for Pillay to be examined before the case resumes.

The request for the suspect to undergo psychiatric evaluation came after his initial court case on 20 September was postponed when Pillay attempted suicide following his arrest in Pietermaritzburg on 19 August. He then appeared on 28 August where senior state prosecutor Yusuf Baba finalised the arrangements for him to be evaluated at Sterkfontein Hospital.

Pillay faces murder charges after the body of a woman believed to be his wife was found in Bryanston on 16 August. Spokesperson for the police Tsekiso Mofokeng identified the woman as Shareen Pillay, who was found by a motorist outside an office complex on the corner of Peter Place road and Karen street. ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaark, said she was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He said she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after substantial blood loss.
