Road safety questionable on Grayston Drive

SANDTON - More can be done to enforce the bylaws pertaining to road safety on Grayston Drive in Sandton, according to Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart.

This after motorist, Solly Gross’ concerns about the ongoing issue of window washers on Grayston Drive. Gross does not understand why there are no visible police in the area to ensure that window washers stop harassing motorists.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police said police officers monitor Grayston Drive. “The Grayston Drive bridge is being patrolled on a daily basis by the JMPD [Metro police],” he said. “Officers cannot be in one place day and night.”

“The Metro police park their vehicles on the Grayston Drive bridge and sit there with their arms folded, taking no notice of the window washers,” said who?

Gross added that when the Metro police officers are present on Grayston Drive, the window washers temporarily move across to another street. “There must surely be a way to eliminate this ongoing problem,” he said.

Minnaar maintained that to stop window washers, motorists needed to stop giving them money and then they wouldn’t hang around anymore.

Gross said he does not expect officers to patrol the area for 24 hours. “The harassment of the window washers creates a bad impression not only for local residents but for visitors to South Africa,” he added.

Stewart added that the issue of road safety on Grayston Drive not only included window washers but also illegal hawkers and street prostitutes.
