Clinic highlights new way of treating veins

MORNINGSIDE - A relatively new method of effectively treating troublesome veins using a simple procedure has been brought to light.

This is according to Morningside Medi-Clinic which highlighted the new treatment known as radiofrequency ablation. It is a relatively unheard of procedure and according to Lisa West of the clinic, is a vast improvement from traditional treatment of veins

“The traditional method of treating veins is vein-stripping performed in-theatre involving general anaesthetic, while this procedure provides more permanent results and is a walk-in-and-walk-out procedure with almost zero recovery time,” she explained.

She added that about 1 million procedures have been performed worldwide since 1998 and the success rate had been incredibly high.

West encouraged those suffering from problems with their veins to contact the clinic and said the procedure was covered by most medical aids.

“The doctor will have to motivate this procedure with your medical aid, but most South African medical aids will cover your account from ordinary hospital benefits,” she said.

Daniel Lehutjo, acting chief executive and registrar of the Council for Medical Schemes said, “The council is not aware if schemes specifically exclude this procedure in their benefits, and the benefit would depend on the specific scheme and benefit option concerned,” he said.

Lehutjo confirmed that like most treatments, pre-authorisation would be necessary for the treatment.

West advised potential patients to contact 011 784 2804 for a free vein-screening or visit www.veintreatments.co.za to book a screening.
