Primestars teaches pupils to save and invest

SANDTON - Aimed at educating young people on the importance of saving money, the Smartbucks Mind your Moola financial literacy programme continued with a second movie screening at Sandton City.

The series, in its second instalment, took place on 14 September and highlighted the importance of saving through an educational movie tackling the issue.

Martin Sweet, managing director of Primestars, explained the concept of using films to communicate the important message of saving for young people.

This innovative medium offers participants the opportunity to gain insight into and learn about a variety of topics that include maths and science… leadership and entrepreneurship in a fun and experiential manner,” he said.

He added that for this year’s programme, 14 cinema complexes across South Africa will screen the films over five consecutive Sundays, with the pupils enjoying the cinema experience for free.

Additionally, Sweet said, the screenings would reach approximately 15 000 of the most disadvantaged high school pupils.

Also present at the screening was Seelan Gobalsamy, CEO of Stanlib, who explained the company’s involvement in the savings programme.

“We are passionate about motivating ordinary South Africans to save and invest and giving them the tools to do so [and] through Smartbucks we aim to empower our youth to take control of their futures,” he said.

He added that financial literacy was a responsibility for leading companies such as Stanlib, renowned as an asset management company.

National Youth Development Agency executive chairperson, Yershen Pillay, added to this by stressing the important role played by financial literacy in South Africa.

“Educating [the] youth on saving and financial literacy is what the Smartbucks initiative is all about and we are proud to be a partner of such an initiative,” he said.

The series is sponsored by Stanlib, Liberty, Samsung, NYDA, Tsogo Sun, Putco, Bidvest Steiner, Gearhouse, Event Production Company and AV Systems.
