Police, suspects in shootout in Marlboro

MARLBORO - Bramley police have issued a warning to residents of Sandton and Bramley after a shootout occurred between the police and suspects in Marlboro.

UPDATE: 18 September, 2pm:

According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley police, residents are urged to report any house robberies or driveway robberies committed where a white Volvo was used.

“Residents can report any crimes linked to the vehicle to either the Sandton or Bramley police stations,” he said.

Maphakela added that the vehicle, which was used to commit a house robbery in Atholl, was hijacked in Edenvale in April.

The dramatic shootout occurred this morning after the Sandton police gave chase to four suspects which resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects. Maphakela said the stolen goods were recovered, along with tools used to commit the robbery. More details to follow.

Clothing, appliances and alcohol were among the stolen items recovered from an Atholl house robbery.

UPDATE: 18 September, 11.30am:

One suspect was arrested in Marlboro following a car chase after being involved in a robbery on the morning of 18 September.

The arrested suspect has been linked to 20 house and driveway robberies in the Sandton and Bramely policing sectors.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley police, said the suspects were chased by Sandton police officers after the vehicle looked suspicious. The police fired shots and the vehicle came to a standstill outside Sasol Garage on Marlboro Drive. The incident took place at around 9am on 18 September.

Manager of the garage Imraan Matha said three suspects tried to escape from the police on foot and they ran up Marlboro Drive. Matha said one suspect jumped onto an ice-cream truck and escaped.

Electronic goods, clothing, jewellery and alcohol were recovered from the vehicle. Maphakela could not confirm whether the vehicle had been stolen but Sandton police was currently doing a forensic sweep of all the stolen goods and the vehicle.

There were five to six bullet-holes on the vehicle.

18 September 11.02am: 

According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley police, the suspects had just committed a robbery in another surburb when the chase took place.

“The suspects, approximately four, had just committed a house robbery in Atholl and were making their escape when the police spotted the suspects’ getaway vehicle and gave chase,” he said.

The suspects had made off with valuables including a flat screen television set and jewellery. 

The police shot at the suspects’ car and managed to puncture a tyre, which caused the car to come to a halt.

Maphakela confirmed that three of the suspects managed to escape, while one was arrested on the scene by the police. 

He added that that the police were still investigating the incident and that the suspect would appear in court soon. More details to follow.
