Students learn to mind their moola

SANDTON - Pupils of Realogile Secondary School, S’godiphola Secondary School, Liberty Community College and Tsosoloso Ya- Afrika High School were taught the value of saving money.

This was at a special screening of Smartbucks 3 at Ster Kinekor in Sandton City.

The screening formed part of Primestars Marketing’s, Smartbucks – Mind your Moola financial literacy programme which attempts to educate pupils about the importance of saving by portraying real-life scenarios.

Managing director of Primestars Marketing, Martin Sweet said, “Consumer education is the answer to financial apathy, and it begins with teaching our children the basic fundamentals of financial literacy, including how to budget properly, manage debt, save and spend wisely. These are the key lessons of money management taught in the Smartbucks programme.”

The pupils were treated to popcorn and cool drinks while mingling with the stars of the film, and deputy director-general of the Department of Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli and Seipati Nekhondela of the National Treasury. Representatives from sponsors such as Liberty Life, Samsung, Putco, Bidvest Steiner, Tsogo Sun, Gearhouse, AV Systems and The Event Production Company also attended the event to show their support,

Executive chairperson of National Youth Development Agency, Yershen Pillay said, “Financial literacy is crucial for all South Africans as it empowers one to understand how money works and how best to use it, and importantly refers to the skills that allow an individual to make informed financial decisions. “Educating youth on saving and financial literacy is what the Smartbucks initiative is all about and we are proud to be a partner of such an initiative.”
