Supporting Layla and others

Every year, thousand of athletes head to the Wanderers Club to partake in the Spar Women's Challenge – and while some are running to win, many others are running to support a good cause.

While the race is, well simply that – a race, it is also a beacon of hope for cancer survivors and much of the money raised goes towards the Reach for Recovery programme, which supplies practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their families.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette together with Spar, have launched the My Spar My Reason campaign, which aims to create awareness around cancer and to tell some of the heroic and tragic cancer stories.

Stories such as Layla O’Neil’s, which not only touch lives, but have inspired entire communities. O’Neil is a four-year-old girl from Joburg North who suffers from neauroplasm glial ependymoma, a rare form of cancer which affects her central nervous system. Throughout the year, O’Neil and her family have been incredibly strong and inspirational, and so this year I will be supporting athletes at the Spar Women’s Challenge for O’Neil and her family. While the money raised is in fact going to breast cancer, there is a website one can visit to support neauroplasm glial ependymoma patients. The site is called Ependy Angels and I urge all those looking for a great initiative to investigate further.

Due to my extreme laziness and being wholly unfit, I will be there cheering runners on and listening to peoples stories as to why they are running/supporting this cancer initiative.

There are so many brave, inspiring and amazing people out there and I would like to hear and publish your stories, so please get in touch with us and tell us your reason for running.

[F] Go to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette Facebook page to post your story/reason or email rkg@caxton.co.za. By sharing your reasons, you stand in line to win one of five R500 Spar vouchers.
