Cheese and wine in green oasis

PAULSHOF - Friends of Rietfontein hosted a cheese and wine walk in the picturesque Rietfontein Nature Reserve on Holkam Road, Paulshof.

Guests were able to take in the warm spring sunshine and enjoy the greenery of the reserve, an oasis in the heart of urban Johannesburg.

After completing the walk, guests unwound by snacking on delicious cheese and crackers, and tried a variety of the different wines from Lanzerac Wine Estate.

Friends of Rietfontein host a number of events in the reserve and encourage residents to make regular use of it. The reserve is a 25 hectare indigenous green space with a quartzite koppie from which there are excellent views of Johannesburg. The reserve is also the home of FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, an organisation which rescues and rehabilitates wild, indigenous wildlife from around South Africa. There is a variety of bird life to be seen in the reserve including swifts, Cape glossy starlings, mousebirds, greater-striped swallows, fiscal flycatchers and more. There are also a number of buck who roam at the entrance to the reserve as well as on the koppie.

The reserve is open everyday from 8am to 5pm and can be accessed via either the main entrance on Holkam Road or via the FreeMe entrance, further down the road. Entrance is free but no dogs are allowed in the reserve.
