Protea Hotel Balalaika participate in Ice Bucket Challenge

SANDTON - The Protea Hotel Balalaika raised awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by participating in the world-wide Ice Bucket Challenge with 15 of their employees jumping into a pool of ice.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is an initiative has swamped social media since June to raise awareness and funds for ALS and motor neurone disease (MND). The activity involves the participant having ice water poured over their head and posting the video on the web. The participant then challenges another person, who is expected to accept within 24 hours.

Marketing co-ordinator for the hotel, Lorene du Plessis said, “The hotel filled their swimming pool with ice and willing staff jumped into the ice pool, [wearing] their uniforms, to raise funds for the International Alliance of ALS.

“All participants sponsored R100 towards this charity, and the hotel matched whatever was raised on the day, reaching a grand total of R5 000 to ALS and MND.”

Du Plessis said that the hotel then challenged The Bull Run Restaurant, The Protea Hotel Centurion and any other Sandton hotel who will be expected to participate in 24 hours.
