Be warned at the Field and Study Park

PARKMORE - Rose Johnson of the Friends of the Field and Study Park wants to warn residents about safety at the park.

“Sadly, crime has appeared at our lovely park with the general increase [in crime] in the area,” said Johnson.

She said there has been a number of incidents at the park where walkers were faced by a man or two, with a gun.

This following the article in August, Two couples robbed at gunpoint in Parkmore, in which two couples were traumatised after they were robbed at gunpoint by two men, while having a braai.

Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police said no arrests were made and the police are investigating the case.

Johnson explained that the attacks mainly take place between 5pm and 6pm. “No one has been hurt,” she added. She said women or couples who are alone are primarily the targets but all visitors to the park should take heed of their safety at all times.

“Do not walk on your own and out of sight,” explained Johnson. She suggested that people walk in groups.

Johnson added, “If in doubt walk to the middle of the field. If you feel unsafe or threatened, walk to the guardhouse at the recreational centre.”

Johnson encouraged visitors to be aware of their surroundings at all times. “Do not wear valuables or have valuables in your car,” she added.

She said the park is considering increasing the security vehicle presence around, as well as within, the park. “Please let us know of any other incidents that occur at the park,” she said.
