Boot it or lose it

SANDTON - Braving the late August cold front, the Sandton police took to the streets to promote their campaign to alert motorists of smash and grab crimes.

The campaign, Boot It or Lose It, saw women staff members of the police station distributing pamphlets to alert motorists of the danger of such incidents.

Sandton police spokesperson, Captain Kym Cloete, explained that the campaign had been an on-going one within the province and was recently brought to the area.

“Basically, what we are trying to do with this campaign, is to make the public aware that smash and grab incidents are preventable if people place their valuables in a safe place like a boot,” she said.

She added that the plan was to alert as many motorists as possible and to that end, hotspots and intersections would be the main focus.

“We [as women] decided to head this campaign because, in most smash and grab incidents, women are often targeted more and therefore more vulnerable,” she said.

Cloete cautioned motorists to always lock their vehicles and to avoid stopping in remote areas.

“We really want to stress to citizens that with the community’s assistance, smash and grab incidents can be curbed. It is a preventable crime,” she said.
