Vehicle-related crime not letting up

SANDTON - Sandton police weekly crime report shows vehicle-related crime and house robbery still prevalent.

The latest police reports from Sandton Sector 1 and 2 demonstrate that vehicle-related crime is still a problem in the affected suburbs, which include Sunninghill, Lonehill, Rietfontein and Paulshof.

According to a report by Captain Kym Cloete, communications officer at Sandton Police Station, most crimes took place on Thursdays and Fridays. Sector 2 saw most incidents occurring around the middle of the day, while most crimes were committed in the morning and the late afternoon to evening in Sector 1.

However, vehicle-related crime was not the only crime suffered by the community. An investigation is still underway after one Sunninghill resident was subjected to a house robbery on 20 August at 11.30am. Three suspects, one armed with a knife, entered the house through an unlocked sliding door while the resident was inside. The man attempted to fight the suspects, but was assaulted and tied up while they ransacked the house. Taking electronic equipment and clothing, the suspects fled in the resident’s vehicle, a while Mercedes Benz, and their own white Ford Kuga.

Cloete warned residents to become more aware, and to take responsibility for their own safety and that of their possessions. Community members are advised to exercise caution when approaching the house, and to be aware of suspicious individuals loitering near the car. It is preferable to park parallel to the driveway, allowing a quick escape if a dangerous situation develops.

Cloete added that residential burglaries and robberies often take place when alarms are not armed or not functioning, or when gates and houses are unlocked. It is essential to ensure that gates are as secure as possible and to check alarm systems regularly.
