Illegal’ billboard could cause an uproar from residents

SANDTON - The billboard erected at the Mushroom Farm Park might be illegal.

This according to Ward 91 councillor, Stewart Andrew who said assurance had been given by the Johannesburg Property Company that no further billboards or advertising would be permitted at the park.

“This will undoubtedly result in a huge uproar from residents,” said Stewart.

He said residents had agreed to the Hyundai balloon at the park, provided that the balloon would be the only advertising in the area.

Sipho Mbete of the property company explained that only the City of Johannesburg’s planning department had the authority to approve the erection of the billboard. “We deal with the submission of applications for billboards and the agreements,” explained Mbete.

He said as far as he was aware, the company responsible for the billboard submitted an application in 2002 which was refused by the planning department however, the company appealed the decision.

No comment was received from the planning department at the time of publication.

This is a developing story. More information will follow as it becomes available.
