The City opens up municipal facilities

JOBURG - The City of Joburg has opened the doors of municipal facilities to the public in a bid to optimise the use of these resources.

The city council’s community development department has invited community-based organisations, sports federations, non-governmental organisations and non-profit organisations to submit proposals to use municipal facilities which included library and information services; sports, recreation and aquatics facilities; and arts, culture and heritage sites.

“In line with the City’s Growth and Development Strategy – Joburg 2040, the department seeks to promote equality, social cohesion and job creation by increasing free access to facilities,” the city council said in a statement.

According to the city council, activities that qualify for the use of municipal facilities include healthy lifestyle programmes, job creation workshops and exhibitions, skills training and sports development initiatives and those that promote social cohesion.

Applicants must be residents in the metropolitan jurisdiction, and proposals should outline the intended use of the facility.

The proposed activity must be free to the public and in line with the programmes and initiatives outlined by the city council.

The proposal should also indicate which facilities were being sought for use.

The city council noted that a successful application did not guarantee permanent use of the facilities, and opportunities would be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis in all regions.

Submissions can be made to lynnew@joburg.org.za
