Stabbing suspect needs medical examination

RANDBURG - An application for the suspect, who is charged with stabbing his wife 50 times in Bryanston, to undergo medical examination has been put forward in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.

Senior public prosecutor Yusuf Baba put forward the application for the accused to undergo a 30-day medical examination in order to determine whether he is fit to stand trial. This is in terms of the Mental Health Act Section 77 and 78.

The court heard that the accused is showing suicidal signs.

The decision on the application will be heard in court on 28 August.

The accused appeared in court and kept his head down during proceedings.

He faces charges of premeditated murder and the possible sentence is life imprisonment.

The accused will be held in the medical facility of the Johannesburg Prison until his next court appearance.
