Gantry alarmed fixed but residents want answers

JOBURG - The constant alarm from the Kiewiet e-toll gantry that Lombardy East residents were forced to endure for nearly a week has been fixed.

However, residents have been given few answers about the disturbance.

Electronic Tolling Collection (ETC), the company responsible for designing, building and operating the e-tolling system, said the alarm was set off by an electric fence.

“The sporadic siren was activated due to an intermittent false alarm that emanated from the electrical fence.”

According to ETC, the problem had been addressed and the company was in the process of rectifying it to avoid any re-occurrences of this nature.

The company said it appreciated the public’s efforts to bring the matter to its attention, but did not indicate why it took nearly a week to resolve.

However, residents demands answers as to why it took so long to be addressed.

Although the alarm had finally been disarmed, Lombardy East resident Christine Niemand said, “I don’t want this to just die down, I want to know why it took so long for them to shut it off.”

She added that she also wanted to know what action would be taken against the staff at the Modderfontein e-toll office.

However, ETC did not respond to specific questions regarding its response time and the comments that were allegedly made to Niemand by staff at the Modderfontein e-toll office.
