Juniors celebrate international left handers day

SUNNINGHILL - The children and teachers of Junior College Sunninghill celebrated international left handers day through fun and educational activities on 13 August.

The celebration kicked off at 10am with all the students taking part in a number of activities testing their abilities with their left hand. Grade 00 teacher Bianca Leathers said, “The day is just bringing awareness to left-handed children. We live in this right-handed world, so today’s just a good and different way for them to learn.

“We can only determine a child’s dominant hand from the age of three. So it’s important to catch it early to help with their integration into the learning world,” said Leathers.

From throwing tennis balls to building an animal farm, the children were tested using their left hands while playing, which Leathers said was the best way for them to learn.

Grade R teacher Judy Lesch said, “Most of the children are used to building or drawing with their right hand. And today is important because it gives them that awareness of the difference between their left and right hands. It helps them realise that they have to concentrate more when using their left hand.”
