Sandton residents cautioned on crime trends

SANDTON - The Sandton police have issued a stern warning for residents after areas in Sandton saw a spike in specific crime incidents.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police, crimes that saw an increase in the past month include theft of vehicles, hijacking and smash-and-grabs.

Sector 3 experienced vehicle-related crime the past month, with these crimes commonly taking place between 8:30am and 12pm towards the end of the week.

Sector 3 consists of the surburbs of Benmore; Benmore Gardens; Dalecross; Duxberry; Glenadrienne; Hurl Park; Hurlingham; Little Filian; Moodie Hill; Morningside, Morningside Manor Morningside Ex. 40; New Brighton; Parkmore; Sandown; Sunset Acres; Sandhurst x4; Strathaven

Meanwhile, Sector 4 has been facing incidents of burglary in the past month, with most of the crimes taking place between 6:30am and 7am during the week.

Sector 4 consists of Buccleuch; Eastgate; Kelvin; Kramerville; Wendywood; Marlboro, Marlboro Gardens; Wesco Park.

Cloete offered residents tips on how to keep safe and minimise the risk of becoming a victim.

“When approaching your house entrance by car or on foot, ensure that it is safe to enter and that you have not been followed. Be aware of persons loitering in the near vicinity,” she advised.

She also advised that community members ensure that their gates are “tamper-proof” and regularly check their security alarm system and arm it when leaving the premises.

“Community members simply have to become more aware and take responsibility for their own safety and that of their possessions”, she concluded.
