Wayne Gordon explained, “The smell is definitely sewage – ot is not a chemical smell.
“I am trying to get the smell stopped. It is terrible.”
Gordon lives in the area and he is affected by the smell. He said the stench seems to subside over weekends, however, it starts again on Monday afternoons.
“It seems to disappear at around midnight,” he added.
“It seems to me that sewage is being pumped into the river in the late afternoon and evening time.”
There is a large manhole nearby the river that Gordon believes is probably leaking into the water pipe that carries the sewage.
Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Joburg Water said Gordon’s query had been logged to be inspected.
“We will remedy the situation if it is something affecting Johannesburg Water,” she assured.
