Water shutdown angers residents

GALLO MANOR - Residents in River Club, Eastgate, Gallo Manor, Benmore and Parkmore are livid that their water has been shut off since last week.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous contacted the Sandton Chronicle to say that she last had water on 24 July. The resident said she had tried to contact Johannesburg Water on their customer hotline number but received no response.

“Why must we pay R2 500 a month for water, but then queue up to fetch water in buckets from a truck,” she said. “I have a house in Durban, I think I’ll just pack up and go stay there.” Johannesburg Water was not available for comment, however the agency tweeted on 23 July that they were conducting maintenance on pressure reducing valves in Sandton and that the work would affect Gallo Manor and surrounding areas.

On 28 July Johannesburg Water tweeted, “Please note, JW team is still on site and has been since Saturday morning. They are working as fast as possible to restore water. #Sandton. In a later tweet the entity said, “Estimated time for completion of repairs is late this afternoon.#Sandton.”
