Redhill pupil wins olympiad

SANDTON - Redhill School pupil Samuel Musker has clinched first prize in this year's coveted De Beers English Olympiad, an annual English competition.

Musker, currently doing his matric competed against more than 8 000 entrants from across the southern Africa region.

Sandy Musker, Sam’s mother, explained that her son was entered into the competition by the school due to his academic performance.

“Sam has always loved English and mathematics and is in fact, one of the top three English pupils in his grade, so he was enthusiastic about the competition,” she said.

She added that her son had always been passionate about academic activities and described him as an “all-rounder” at the school. In addition to being a top achiever, Musker is a member of the South African National Debate team, is the deputy head boy and is an active sportsman at his school.

When asked how he felt about winning, Musker said he was happy to be announced as the winner of the competition, despite almost not attending the prize-giving ceremony in Grahamstown.

“Despite his misgivings about attending, due to writing his preliminary exams at that point, Sam opted to attend and was pleased to find out he had won the top position,” she explained.

Musker added that she was proud of her son’s achievement and had always supported him in his various activities. This has clearly paid off since Musker was asked to represent South Africa as part of the national team at the World Schools Debating Championships. The championship will take place from 5 to 15 August in Thailand.

Musker plans to study engineering either at the University of Cape Town or the University of the Witwatersrand.
