Elderly knit for orphans

SANDTON - Elderly residents of Rosehaven retirement village hosted a “Knit-a-thon” on 22 July at the retirement home.

The residents began their charitable drive last week, in commemoration of Mandela Day, and have thus far knitted blankets, jerseys and clothing for babies, all to be given to Hotel Hope Orphanage.

According to Greta Collier, a representative from Rosehaven, the local church requested assistance with commemorating the day and Rosehaven jumped at the exciting opportunity to honour Mandela.

“Mandela led by example so we, at Rosehaven, decided to do this to emulate his legacy and follow in his footsteps of giving,” she explained.

Collier also added that the elderly enjoyed making the clothing, as it gave them something to do for others for a change.

The knitted attire was then handed to Hotel Hope orphanage, which is based in Melville.

The Ladies Knitter’s Group, from the San Sereno Retirement Village, also donated knitted blankets and clothing to the children’s home.

Oliver Quambusch, founder of the orphanage, said he was humbled by the gesture and expressed deep gratitude over the generous contribution.

“We love the knitted items, especially the children, and we see the love and care that went into making them,” he said.

He added that Hotel Hope was delighted when they were informed of the knitted clothing, praising the spirit of generosity the elderly and nation have displayed.

“For Hotel Hope, what the women have done to honour Mandela and give back is inspiring,” he said.

Hotel Hope orphanage was established in 2008 after Quambusch was inspired by God to help others and establish a ministry in South Africa.

It is a part of Hotel Hope Ministries, also managed by Quambusch, and focuses on three areas, namely children in need, mothers in crisis and social entrepreneurship, and is also active in townships such as Alexandra.

“I believe that no one can do everything but we can all do something,” he concluded.

People can assist Hotel Hope orphanage by donating money or any available clothing available. Alternatively, people can volunteer to assist the ministry in Melville or Alexandra.
