Bryanston community gets a pedestrian bridge

BRYANSTON - City Parks and the Bryanston East Community Forum (BECF) launched a pedestrian bridge in Bryanston.

The new pedestrian bridge over the Braamfontein Spruit replaced an old bridge which posed serious danger to pedestrians, runners and cyclists in the community. “The old bridge was in a bad state of disrepair and very unsafe to use,” said Ian Tumiel, from the forum.

He said the boys from the 1st Bryanston Scouts designed and built the bridge as part of their community contribution project under the supervision of their Scout leader, Mike Stanley and Sean Dickinson, regional co-ordinator of the scout program.

“It is unbelievable that scouts built this bridge, you’d swear it was the work of an engineer,” said Khaya Zitha, from City Parks Region E.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the location of the bridge on the corner of Devonshire and Hamilton roads in Bryanston. The ceremony was attended by representatives from City Parks, 1st Bryanston Scouts, Scouts South Africa, Parkrun Bryanston, Allan Grant Holdings and BECF.

Tumiel added, “A lot of time was spent on this bridge to ensure that it can serve the Bryanston community. It was also a joint effort to keep people safe when they cross over the Braamfontein Spruit.”

Zitha commended all parties involved in the creation of the bridge. “I continue to encourage community members to take on initiatives such as this and make their communities better.”
