Redhill School’s 67 Minutes Campaign

BRYANSTON - Redhill School pupils in Bryanston contributed their 67 minutes on Mandela Day to the less fortunate.

They took on the plight of some Alexandra community members who’s homes burnt down last month.

Taylor Hagan, a Grade 4 pupil was moved by the community’s loss and wrote a letter to the Redhill Social Awareness Committee.

She appealed to the committee to organise a soup kitchen, blanket and clothes appeal for the Alexandra community for the commitee’s 67 minutes initiative on Mandela Day.

An appeal for old clothes, blankets, food and anything that could help the community members rebuild their homes was implemented and well supported by Redhill School families.

Nirvana Rogers of Redhill School said the committee held the soup kitchen in Alexandra on 18 July.

“A soup kitchen has been set up by an elderly Alexandra resident, Mama Hilda,” explained Rogers.

She said Hilda and her friends served a hot cup of soup on a weekly basis to an elderly group of township residents. “Redhill Prep School supports Mama Hilda during the winter term with money that is raised from their recreation evenings,” added Rogers.

“On Mandela Day Redhill School pupils gave Mama Hilda a much needed break whilst they made soup for the community. It has also become a customary practice for the Grade 3 pupils to make sandwiches on this day. It is such a pleasure to watch these little hands work so hard to contribute their 67 minutes on Mandela Day.”

Rogers said Redhill School was extremely grateful to the community who have opened their hearts to support their worthy project.
