Cell C helps the hungry on Mandela Day

SANDTON - Cell C has rallied its forces to make a difference in a child’s life in honour of the late Nelson Mandela on Mandela Day.

In partnership with Stop Hunger Now SA, Cell C was hard at work on 15 July creating meals for malnourished children.

Its head office in Buccleuch, Sandton, became a hive of activity when 120 volunteers packed 36 000 meals in three hours.

Cell C Foundation managing executive, Suzette van der Merwe said the initiative would feed 500 children with three meals a week for six months. The meals packed were highly nutritious and comprised of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition.

The company’s CEO, Jose Dos Santos said, “We are very proud to be able to make a tangible contribution towards this important day on the South African and global calendar. Nothing gives me more pleasure than the opportunity to join my staff as we roll up our sleeves and tackle food insecurity.”

Dos Santos was joined by Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss and three former Miss South Africa title holders, Melinda Bam, Bokang Montjane and Claudia Henkel.

“We are incredibly grateful to Cell C for getting involved in tackling hunger this Mandela Day,” said Barry Mey, CEO of Stop Hunger Now SA.

The organisations that will benefit from the food parcels are SOS Children’s Villages, Impoverished Communities in Kroondal, the Association for People with Disabilities, and various early childhood development centres supported by Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa.
