UPDATE: Oscar’s uncle defends his nephew

SANDTON - Online reports suggest that a night out at a Sandton club turned sour for Para-Olympian Oscar Pistorius.

Oscar Pistorius has become the victim of an attention seeker.

This according to a statement released by the para-Olympian’s uncle, Leo Pistorius in response to claims that Pistorius was involved in a bar brawl in Sandton on 12 July.

“We have taken note of the media coverage of the so-called ‘nightclub incident’ over the past 24 hours and feel compelled to issue this statement as some of the outrageous claims simply cannot stand uncorrected,” said the statement.

“Whilst Oscar venturing out into a public space with his cousin in the current climate and whilst his court case is still under way was unwise, those of us closest to him have been witness to his escalating sense of loneliness and alienation. This, we believe is underlying some of his self-harming behaviour.” The statement rubbished businessman Jarred Mortimer’s rendition of events at the VIP Room, and said his statements were designed for maximum attention and damage.

“My investigations indicate that Mortimer was the aggressor and eyewitnesses confirm this,” said Leo Pistorius.

The statement acknowledged Pistorius’ venture into a public space where an incident could occur was ill-considered, but blames this on the “extreme level of emotional pain [faced by Pistorius] that is manifesting itself in some of his recent unwise actions and choices.”

Social media reacts to Oscar’s nightclub ‘brawl’: 15 July 12pm

Social media has been abuzz this morning after readers awoke to news of an alleged nightclub brawl involving Paralympian, Oscar Pistorius.

He was said to be involved in an altercation at the upmarket VIP Room nightclub in Sandton

In response, Facebook and Twitter have been buzzing with quips and comments about the athlete’s apparent further fall from grace.

Frikkie joked on the Sandton Chronicle‘s website, “No shots fired? Rare… .” While AJ wrote, “The mere fact that he [is] out partying with the whole Reeva saga just blows my mind. #no conscience.”

Myra Bosch wrote, “An ‘altercation’ supposes an interaction between two or more people. As Oscar has been involved in several ‘heated altercations’ before, one can only deduct that he is not as innocent as he makes out to be in this one. Several witnesses (in court) have testified to his quick temper. That this characteristic overrides his caution in the light of a looming murder sentence is disturbing, to say the least.”

But some have come to his defence, citing the story as nothing but rubbish. WD wrote, “It’s a stupid blown up nonsense story! No way would he be stupid enough to get involved in an aggre[s]sive situation, he’s trying to get off a murder charge! Sensationalist journalism.”

On Facebook Dean le Roux wrote, “Why do you even look for s__t with oscar… you dont know the pain he is going through even if i don’t like him ,who are you to judge him…MR MORTIMAR.”

While Carol Davis-Hannibal suggested that this story, “makes you wonder…”

On Twitter, Kevin Pietersen tweeted, “Standing trial for murder and he’s tweeting and going clubbing… surely this cannot be happening?” while @fayepeters tweeted this photo:

@mikeln1972 tweeted, “Saturday evening you in a bar doing the very stuff u on trial for then you tweet bible versus. Come on bro!”

This in response to a series of tweets that Pistorius sent early on Sunday morning.

Oscar Pistorius involved in Sandton bar brawl: 14 July 9:07pm

According to local celebrity gossip website, The Juice, the Blade Runner was enjoying a night out at the popular VIP Room Nightclub in Sandton on 12 July.

The site reports that Pistorius and another man were involved in a heated altercation, before Pistorius left the club. Pistorius’ spokesperson, Anneliese Burgess told the site, “We can confirm that Oscar was at a night club with one of his cousins. They sat in a quiet area of the private VIP section when they were approached by the individual.”

She said that the individual, identified as Jared Mortimer approached Pistorius and aggressively engaged him regarding his current murder trial. Pistorius then apparently left the club.

The site however spoke to Mortimer who claims that Pistorius was drunk and aggressive towards him. Mortimer claimed that after Pistorius bragged about how influential he and his family were in South Africa, Pistorius started poking him on the chest, aggressively pulling his neck to talk to him.

Mortimer then allegedly pushed Pistorius to the ground, after which bouncers intervened.

  4. Funny how Mortimer needs to threaten a guy on trial with no legs with his family. He sounds like one sad puppy.

  5. It is obvious that Mortimer is looking for media attention. Well Done Oscar, for walking away from the instigator!

  6. I really couldn’t care less for Oscars feelings or the fact that he is lonely. Thats what happens when you murder someone. Personally if I see him out I will also confront him. How arrogant is he that he feels it fine to be in a public bar after all that has happened

  7. Poor uncle leo. You have done your utmost to protect your nephew. But it hasnt helped him. He has actually killed a young woman. Its not an incident or an accident as you know it. It was very fortunate that oscar didnt have a gun on saturday night. Instead of defending him, you must make sure that he tells the truth. Letting him make excuses and believing him has made it worse.

  8. Defending oscar and believing his excuses has created this terrible person. His family have done more harm than good.

  9. I believe Oscar is innocent, I believe he side of the story… im not saying its right is wright what he did he should have acknowledged the person before pulling the trigger.

Oscar may God be with you today as we await the verdict.
