Metro police finally remove election posters

SANDTON - After nearly two months of being subjected to old election posters, residents will be pleased to know that the Metro police have finally stepped in to remove the posters.

According to fed-up residents, the posters have littered William Nicol Drive and concerns were mounting as to whether they would ever be removed.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the city council finally decided to intervene after political parties failed to do so themselves.

“The city gave all political parties a specific period to remove the posters and finally decided to remove them after parties failed to do so by the deadline,” he said.

This resulted in an operation which Minnaar said began in June, to remove the posters not only from William Nicol Drive, but around the city too.

Minnaar added that political parties whose posters were recovered would be fined R1 000 for each poster recovered.

“All the removed posters will be collated and taken to the Metro offices and from then action will be taken against guilty parties,” he explained.

No specific parties have been identified thus far, but Minnaar confirmed that many posters had been recovered on William Nicol Drive.

Parties were given from 9 May to 9 June to remove their posters and additional time after the initial period lapsed.
