Rivonia residents opposed to proposed development

SANDTON - Residents in the Rivonia area have expressed anger over a high density development proposed for Lot 30, a large piece of land on Stiglingh Road.

The Stiglingh Action Group and Rivonia Residents and Ratepayers Association became concerned when the development was rezoned from 30 units per hectare to 80 units per hectare, giving the developer the opportunity to construct about 350 units.

Association member, Arnold Bell said the shift from 30 units to 80 units did not comply with Johannesburg’s Regional Spatial Development Framework. He added that this development would put more pressure on Rivonia with more traffic and higher volumes of people.

Ward councillor of Ward 106, Stephen Moore said, “The Rivonia area is a high density area already and with all the residents, businesses and traffic the road would not be able to handle such a big structure in the suburb.

“Rivonia’s infrastucture is already under extreme stress and with a lack of needed upgrades in other areas of the suburb, this is a very ill thought out plan.”

Moore said Lot 30 could be used to ease the high density in the area. He said, “Rivonia Primary School is an overcrowded school which is actually filled to capacity, a productive thing to do with the land would be to build another school. The government definitely needs to think ahead on issues such as this one.”
