Mason said that after her first visit to Johannesburg from Washington DC, she fell in love with the area, and the book celebrates that appreciation for the hustling and bustling atmosphere of Sandton.

Garner gave a speech highlighting the history of the Sandton area and its rise to prominence. He said that Hillbrow was the cultural centre of Johannesburg in the ’70s and ’80s, but after the Johannesburg bombings of 1994, people moved their interest to Sandton, a place famous for housing political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, and also where the liberation movement began at Liliesleaf.

He added that in the ’90s investors developed a renewed interest in Sandton saying, “The investors’ great interest in Sandton remains a testament to their belief in our democracy.”

The event was filled with appreciation towards everyone involved with the publication of the book as well as their publisher, Double G Media.

After all the good food and wine, they ended the early evening with a book signing while all in attendance enjoyed a stunning Sandton sunset.
