Baby christened in gown worn by five generations

PARKMORE - The Pitcher family have embraced a tradition which has lasted since 1892.

Five generations of Pitchers have been christened in the same gown that is now 122 years old.

The first family member christened in the gown was Winifred Isemonger in 1892, and the latest was newborn Gemma Louise Bramley who was christened on 1 June at St. Michael’s Anglican Church in Bryanston. Gemma’s grandmother Mary-Anne Pitcher said since the gown was first used they have spent time keeping it clean and preserving it for future generations.

Parkmore resident and grandfather to Gemma, James Pitcher said, “My grandmother, Winifred Isemonger was a family orientated person and it has become a very important part of family.”

With the christening of their granddaughter they have held onto this tradition which has become a significant part in uniting family members.

James added, “I’ve worn it, my brother and grandparents wore it, and I think its become something in our family that has kept us all together. Not only in a religious sense but also as a small symbol that we all relate to.”

Mary-Anne said she hoped future generations of the Pitcher family would wear the gown. She said, “I think it will tie-up the family from the past, future and present together, which is the most important aspect.”
