An evening with Hitler

JOBURG - With a script by Greg Viljoen and a mesmerizing performance by Tim Plewman, the Fringe at Joburg Theatre held the opening of The Last Moustache.

The play delves into the world of conspiracy theories and historical inaccuracies with a Nazi twist, and is back by popular demand with sold-out shows at the Grahamstown Arts Festival and the Market Theatre.

Plewman, best known for his award-winning and iconic Defending the Caveman, transports the audience back to Nazi Germany with a virtuous performance .

Based in the closing years of World War II the play tells the story of Heiner Schmidt, a down and out German theatre actor who lands the not-so-coveted role of Adolf Hitler after his death in 1944. The Nazi propaganda machine leads a plan in staging Hitler’s survival with Schmidt starring as the most demented villain of the 20th century.

Plewman touches on a wide variety of issues pertaining to Hitler’s later life, including his alleged sexual insecurities and personal squabbles with wife Eva Braun, while also poking fun at the devilish figure with finesse and charm.

The play was well-received with audience members roaring with laughter. One audience member, Serena Grobler, said, “The play was great. It was definitely bizarre because its a hard subject to laugh at, but it was incredibly funny and thought provoking.”

Another audience member, Shelley Pembroke said, “Tim Plewman is amazing and handles the subject very well. In my mind he can do no wrong.”

The play will run at The Fringe at Joburg Theatre from 25 June to 5 July
