Man’s bakkie stolen and pawned for pittance

MARLBORO - A man’s bakkie was stolen at gunpoint in Marlboro and pawned for R20 000.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley police said the owner of the bakkie was putting in petrol at a garage when he was approached by a man who asked for his assistance.

“The suspect requested to hire the owner’s bakkie to load some of his things,” explained Maphakela.

He said after they drove off the suspect offered to put in petrol for the owner and he agreed. “The suspect and the owner drove for a few minutes and stopped at another garage in Marlboro when the suspect pulled out a gun and threatened the man with it,” said Maphakela.

He added that another suspect got in the bakkie while it was parked, and the owner was then instructed to drive, all the while the gun was pointed at him.

Maphakela said the owner drove the bakkie to Kempton Park to a pawn shop. “The owner’s bakkie was sold for R20 000 and afterwards he was taken to a blue BMW,” said Maphakela.

He said the victim was then blindfolded after he got into the BMW and the suspects drove around with him and finally dropped him off at Linbro Park, in Marlboro.

Maphakela said the bakkie was valued at R69 000. However, one of the suspects was arrested by the Bramley police after he was identified by the owner of the bakkie.
