Bryanston react to development

BRYANSTON - A number of residents in Bryanston expressed concern and outrage over the proposal of a new development involving the company STOR-age.

The company have proposed the building of a storage facility in the residential area.

A meeting to discuss the proposed development was held in the parking lot of Auto Capital, where the development is set to take place. The discussion was led by STOR-age representative Brandon Joscelyne, who said the establishment of a self-storage facility in the Bryanston residential area would be good for residents. Joscelyne said it would give residents a safe and modern building for self-storage which will be easy to access and will avoid driving to low-level industrial areas.

“There are a host of benefits to establishing these facilities in these areas, but the most critical is that our units are for you or I,” said Joscelyne. “They are easy to access. Everyone has their own personalised unit with a lock and key, there is CCTV surveillance, there’s 24-hour security so it is safe to use. These facilities in these areas allow for better investment and infrastructure.”

Although the company’s intentions seem legitimate, the residents in attendance were greatly concerned regarding the legal aspects of the development and asked for conclusive research. Bryanston resident Hedley Gerhardt expressed worry about the impact of the storage facility on the residential environment such as the increase in traffic.

Gerhardt questioned whether any local authorities were supportive of the issue regarding building and development laws.

He said, “I find it quite surprising that [the city] council are behind the building, because in the regional space and development plan they said that between Clonmore Road and Vlok Road to be purely residential.”

Ward councillor for Ward 102, David Potter said, “The community have responded to this town planning application with some vigour. It is important to note that Bryanston remains a largely residential suburb and that the residents’ views with regards to any town planning application must be taken into account.”
