Alleged cellphone store robbery syndicate smashed

JOHANNESBURG - After a series of cellphone store robberies in the Hyde Park, Sandton and Craighall areas, five suspects thought to be involved in a syndicate, have been arrested.

It is suspected that the suspects were involved in a number of cellphone store robberies. They were arrested in the Johannesburg CBD on 20 June.

According to Leonard Rom, manager of Altech Autopage Cellular, which has been robbed four times since October 2013, the syndicate is made up of over 100 individuals who target cellphone stores across the country.

The last recorded attempted robbery occurred on 17 June at Hyde Park shopping centre where two of four suspects were caught and detained by the Bramley police.

In an intelligence unit operation performed on 20 June, four suspects were apprehended in an attempted robbery at a cellphone shop in the Johannesburg CBD.
