Boys experience a day in the life of a fireman

BENMORE - Varsity College Sandton hosted a Captain Courage project at the Sandton Fire Station.

Captain Courage is a Reach For a Dream initiative in which the foundation works with children between the ages of three and 18 who are fighting life threatening illnesses such as cancer, renal failure and cystic fibrosis.

A total of 10 boys aged between six and eight years old participated in the project at the Sandton Fire Station. The boys were from the Salvation Army in Soweto and St Francis Care Centre in Boksburg.

“The boys had a great adventure and demonstrated their courage by sliding down the fire escape poles, enjoying rides in the fire engines as well as trying their hands at putting out a fire,” said Sindiswa Kubeka on behalf of Varsity College Sandton.

Sibongile Khulu, Reach For a Dream’s events and project coordinator said, “Being diagnosed with a life threatening illness at such a young age is a very challenging experience for children. By taking part in the Captain Courage project, our boys are given the chance to showcase their fighting spirit in participating in courageous and fun activities.”

Varsity College Sandton student relations manager, Vasanthee Govender said, “These young boys are so brave and courageous and they deserved a fun day out. The day was so rewarding and selfless. The boys really fit into the ‘captain courage’ theme”.

The children were served lunch and thereafter Varsity College students of VC Cares, the student volunteer body, treated the children to face painting, colouring in pictures and playing games.

At the end of the planned activities, each boy was honoured with a gold coloured Captain Courage medal for a great show of strength and courage.
