Burst water pipe floods wine cellar of Bryanston home

BRYANSTON - A burst water pipe in Bryanston resulted in the flooding of Stephanie Geyser’s wine cellar.

She said she witnessed the pipe burst on the pavement just outside her house on 6 June. “A jet of water shot about two metres high and then dropped,” she explained. Geyser said the fountain of water was squirting out of the pavement and flooding into her garden. Geyser said she reported it the same day to Joburg Water via their website but received no response.

“On 7 June I found my cellar knee-deep in water,” she explained. “So I put my submersible pump into the cellar and started pumping the water out into the sewage manhole to avoid pumping it into the garden and flooding the neighbour’s garden and house.”

Geyser also said she had to pump out the water to avoid the floodwater reaching her house and flooding the library and destroying her books.

She said she continued calling Joburg Water to come assist with the burst pipe but received no response. “I was told that the complaint had been cancelled,” explained Geyser.

However, she said Joburg Water informed her that the complaint was later reinstated on 11 June. “I assume they did not see the fountain of water squirting out of the pavement and flooding into my garden,” she said.

Geyser said Joburg Water only arrived to repair the burst water pipe on 12 June. “I saw a Joburg Water truck containing pipes and spares and they repaired the burst pipe within 20 minutes of their arrival.”

However, on 20 June Geyser said the water pipe burst again. She has reported the incident to Joburg Water again and they have given her a reference number. “As it is a Friday, I don’t expect Joburg Water to come for another week to fixed it, which means my house will be flooded again for another week,” added Geyser.

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Joburg Water said, “We are still investigating this issue and we will get back to you.”
