Scouts go green

SANDTON - Homestead Lake was a hive of activity as more than 1 500 Scouts participated in the annual Kon-tiki raft-building competition.

This year’s event attracted entries from 52 Scout groups in the Gauteng province.

The theme for the competition was ‘going green, protecting our world’, and the Scouts were encouraged to incorporate this into both their raft construction and the campsites along the water’s edge. Teams arrived on the Friday afternoon, and began setting up their camps and started building their rafts. The rafts were inspected continuously, until they were ready for launch.

A team of Scouts then had to spend the next 24 hours out on the lake on their rafts, which had to be equipped with the necessary cooking and sleeping equipment. During this time the teams also had to complete a number of tasks to test the mobility and seaworthiness of their rafts.

For the shore based supporters, a number of other activities and challenges were also provided. These included a cooking competition, the judging of their campsite construction and the special activities they had prepared for the Beaver Challenge. The Beaver Challenge event provided the opportunity for the Cubs to participate in the Kon-tiki weekend.

1st Horizon Scout Troop were the winners, with the two Robin Hills Scout Troop teams, Team Pick Up and Team RRRECO in second and third place respectively.

Scouting is an outdoor based educational programme which aims to equip young people with the skills and self confidence to become future leaders.

Membership is open to boys and girls.
