Sewage leak interrupts repairs on Coleraine Drive

RIVERCLUB - Resident Len Larson is just one of the residents who is concerned that no one is doing anything about a sewage leak on Coleraine Drive.

This after a portion of the road started collapsing in March this year, ultimately resulting in the closure of the road so that repairs could take place.

Larson said raw sewage was now pouring from Coleraine Drive into the river which runs through the Riverclub residential area, through the Riverclub Golf Course into the Braamfontein Spruit and beyond. “The stench is awful and the water life is dead,” he added.

One of the contractors on site who did not wish to be named said they had stopped the leak, and were working towards a permanent solution. Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp confirmed that a temporary repair to the sewer line was apparently done by Joburg Water.

He said, “The sewer diversion process to re-direct the sewer pipe is set to be completed by the contractor building the bridge,” he explained. “This road repair project is already running late because entities like the City of Johannesburg and Telkom are not being prompt in their services to the community.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency said Joburg Water was made aware of the leak. “We wish to reassure residents that Joburg Water is attending to the issue,” she explained. “The pipe has been secured and Joburg Water has assembled a team to walk the stream and clean up and downstream as required.”
