Rea Vaya drivers embark on illegal strike

JOBURG - Rea Vaya commuters have been hit by another bus drivers’ strike.

The City of Joburg said Rea Vaya bus drivers embarked on an illegal strike on the morning of 3 June.

Rea Vaya bus drivers operating in Soweto did not report for work, and services into the inner city had been come to a halt.

Buses servicing the T1 along Soweto Highway and feeders from Naledi, Protea Glen, Jabuvu, Mofolo and Eldorado Park were among the services affected.

Commuters had been urged to make alternative arrangements.

“The City of Johannesburg apologises to [Rea Vaya] passengers and will provide updates on the situation,” said spokesperson Benny Makgoga.

According to Makgoga, disruptions in the services would continue until Piotrans, the company that manages the operations of Rea Vaya buses, and the South African Municipal Workers Union reached an agreement.

He said union representatives and Piotrans management had entered into negotiations on the afternoon of 3 June, but no agreements had been reached.

Makgoga could not provide any information on the reasons for the drivers’ strike action.

Piotrans was not immediately available for comment.

In April, Rea Vaya commuters were left stranded when bus drivers embarked on a week-long strike.

The drivers demanded that senior staff members be allowed to choose their shifts, the banning of labour brokers and a review of the code.

Piotrans and the union reached an agreement.
