Natural gas company, Egoli Gas launched its eight kilometre pipeline, which will initially deliver 1.5 million gigajoules of natural gas per year.
The natural gas will be imported from Mozambique by Sasol and at full capacity the pipeline will be able to deliver 2.5 million gigajoules yearly.
Egoli Gas was initially licensed by the City of Joburg, but was later privatised and is currently owned by the energy group Reatile, which is the lead investor in the project with MTN.
The pipeline will run from Sasol’s pressure reducing station in Robertsville to MTN’s 14th Avenue Campus, and the gas will feed a new MTN generation plant as well as other customers in Lakeview and Constantia.
Reatile group chairman, Simphiwe Mehlomakulu said the project was Egoli Gas’ first significant new pipeline undertaken in more than 30 years.
Mehlomakulu added that Egoli Gas had the capacity to provide uninterrupted power to 8 000 customers.
“We will soon be connecting four hospitals in Johannesburg under the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development gasification programme,” he said.
He further revealed that plans for a pipeline to the Sandton CBD and surrounding areas was on the cards.
