ANC protest against EWN cartoon

SANDTON - ANC members organised a picket against racism outside the Primedia offices on 30 May.

The picketing was a reaction to a cartoon posted by Eye Witness News labelling the ANC as ‘poephols’ and clowns. The cartoon published on 28 May depicted members of the cabinet appointed by President Zuma as incapable of running the affairs of the country.

ANC Youth League spokesperson, Dr Bandile Masuku, said, “We are one of the leading formations of young people and we are very much concerned about the direction that this re-emergence of racism may take our country to.

“We understand that some people were complacent to apartheid and wished to live in a racially-segregated South Africa, but we want those mean souls to join a progressive South African society by embracing the democratic ethos of a non-racial South Africa..”

He wanted editors to be responsible for what their newsroom published and to embrace democracy.

South African Student Congress secretary general, Luzuko Buku said some students found the cartoon “highly offensive and extremely distasteful”.

“We are saddened by the fact that in the 20th year of celebrating our freedom, our people are still victims of blatant racism,” said Buku.

ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa led the protestors and received permission from Primedia management to picket outside its offices, if done in a calm and regulated manner.

Kodwa requested the editor of Eye Witness News, Katy Katopodis to receive their memorandum, but CEO of Primedia, Roger Jardine was on hand to represent the media house.

“We hear what you have said and will take the time to reflect,” said Jardine. “Let us resolve this.”

Kodwa calmed the crowd down and reminded them to behave in a dignified manner.

“We still have scars from racism, but look forward to a non-racial South Africa in the future,” added Kodwa.
