Red alert for follow-home robberies

SANDTON - Follow-home robberies are once again proving to be a huge issue in the Sandton area.

According to Brigadier Alan Billings, station commander at the Sandton Police Station, bank customers are followed out of the bank after withdrawing large sums of money.

“From what the banks have told us, it appears as though a suspect loiters in the bank, pretending to fill out forms. When they identify a client withdrawing a significant sum of money, they follow the customer out of the bank and phone their colleagues who are waiting nearby in a vehicle,” said Billings.

These suspects then follow the customer until they reach a vulnerable point such as their driveway, and then rob them.

Billings confirmed that at first it was thought that the tellers in the banks were involved in tipping the criminals off, but banks have now put strict security measures in place to prevent this from happening.

Members of the public are urged to be extremely vigilant when leaving banks. If they feel that they are being followed, they should drive to a safe place and contact the police.
