Environmental consultant and author of Going Green, Simon Gear hosted the dialogue for people to engage on topics such as the rise of the eco-consumer, the mark of the carbon footprint and the blueprints of the Glass Recycling Company.
“Going green in a modern context is a struggle between lifestyle and comfort,” said Gear. “It is almost impossible to do in an urban modern environment.”
Trend analyst, Dion Chang spoke about the consumer mindset. He said, “We have moved from an agricultural to industrial to technological world.”
Chang explained how important environmental awareness was to the millennial generation. The millennials are also known as generation y, and are often described as a generation with liberal attitudes towards social and cultural issues. “Millennials have a vastly different mindset,” said Chang.
This generation believe companies should be looking into new innovative ways and solutions to encourage people to recycle.
He explained that retailers looked towards consumers’ lifestyles to find inspiration, therefore “instead of nagging and pushing the consumer to recycle, rather suggest ways”.
CEO of the Glass Recycling Company, Shabeer Jhetam noted the importance of glass recycling in the country.
“It reduces air and water pollution, assists in water savings and saves energy,” said Jhetam.
He encouraged companies to reuse and recycle these materials as it would benefit the environment.
