Sign of the crimes

SANDTON - The topic for May’s edition of Domestic Watch meetings is crime signage.

Domestic Watch facilitator Penny Steyn said criminals often left signs outside a property to inform each other about potential houses to break into. “Criminals use chalk markings outside homes to help other criminals target the rich and vulnerable,” said Steyn.

“We always ask the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or signs to the police, and with this information the police will investigate.”

According to Steyn, the police department had investigated whether symbols were used to identify the addresses of elderly people, but they were aware that different colours were used to mark homes.

Some criminals use colour to indicate whether occupants are able to defend themselves or if the house is an easy target.

Domestic Watch will hold three meetings on 21 May. There is a meeting at 9.30am at the tennis clubhouse in Hilton Road in Linbro Park, followed by a meeting at 11am at Bordeaux Scout Hall in Bordeaux, and at 11.30am at Christ Church Sandton in Gallo Manor.

Meetings at Christian Science Church and Rivonia Library at 12pm will be held on 23 May, and at Rosebank Union Church at 10am, corner William Nicol Drive and Sandton Drive.

There are meetings in Sandton on 28 May at Sandton Sports Club at 10am, Woodlands Park at 12pm and Sandton Police Station lapa at 2pm.
