‘Meter taxi drivers are messy’

SANDTON - Motorists have complained about metre taxis throwing rubbish out of their vehicles while taking their lunch.

They have been spotted near the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel and Village Walk Shopping Centre tossing food wrappers out of their windows instead of using the bins on the street.

According to the director of SA Cab Craig Robinson, the drivers from the cab company depend on the call centre for bookings only, and are all independent and responsible for their own behaviour.

When asked about the littering, Robinson said SA Cab has strict rules and regulations. “At a click of a button, we can throw them off,” he said.

“[But] this is their livelihood – we cannot throw a guy off because of hearsay.” He requested that motorists who notice cab drivers littering to please send SA Cab their number plate or picture of the driver and his vehicle.

Robinson also pointed out that there are several cab companies around Sandton and many are not regulated by SA Cab, and reminded motorists to be aware of the vehicle’s branding

A City of Johannesburg bylaw states, “No person may cause litter, or throw, let fall, deposit, spill or in any other way discard any refuse into or onto any public place, other than into a refuse container provided for the purpose”.
