Community calls for effective drainage system to protect properties

BENMORE- Due to a high water table, homeowners on Hollyhock Road are experiencing damp-related problems of their houses.

This is according to Daphne Schwab, the client liaison officer for Ward 103 community forum. She said homeowners would have to damp-proof their homes, and insisted Johannesburg Roads Agency should investigate the issue and find a method that works.

Schwab suggested that the roads agency could install an agricultural drain the length of the servitude behind Hollyhock Road. Chairperson of Hollyhock Residents, Stuart Scott said the water flow was driven by the spring in the servitude behind Hollyhock Road.

“There is no effective drainage system to lead water to the stream, so it ends up running towards the homes,” he said.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said the underground water problem was from the large amount of rainfall Johannesburg had received this year. Most of the water pipes in the Morningside suburb needed to be replaced because they were clogged up from rubble from constant building developments, and needed to be gutted.

“Johannesburg Roads Agency is in charge of maintaining underground water and supposed to clean the pipes two to three times a year,” said Earp.

“They need to find a solution.”
